The Republic of Slovenia is a constitutional republic and a parliamentary democracy. Power is divided between an elected president, a prime minister and a bicameral Parliament comprised of the 90-member national assembly that leads on legislative initiatives. The other house is the National Council. The National Council is primarily an advisory board made up of members from social, professional, economic and local interests.

Currently Slovenia is regarded by many as being off the tourism radar screen making it a popular destination for those preferring less crowded places. If Slovenia was the middle of a compass, north would point to Austria, east to Hungary, south to Croatia and west to Italy. After becoming independent from Yugoslavia in 1991 and joining the European Union in 2004, Slovenia is definitely a unique spot for tourists.
